And the “Good Vibes Only” Award goes to...
I am so excited to be the next stop on the “Good Vibes Only” Blog Tour featuring the new fabric line by Sassafras Lane Designs for Windham fabrics! Check out the lookbook for even more inspiration!
It was easy to get inspired with this beautiful rainbow of fabrics and, when I saw the feature prints with the inspirational words on them, I wanted to find a way to incorporate them into my project. How could I share these Good Vibes Only sentiments, and how would I pick which words to highlight? And then it came to me. The Good Vibes Only award goes to…
I decided to create some small wallhanging/pillow projects to award your favorite recipient! Clockwise from top left I have created a trophy, a ribbon, a medal, and a badge. (Keep reading for specific instructions for each award.)
I thought it would be fun if you could change out the Good Vibes words depending on what award you wanted to give, so I finished a bunch of different words and put velcro on the back so they can be changed out for whatever ‘award’ you would like to give.
I used some Wonder Under to fuse the words to a background fabric. Then I cut around the word, top stitched around the unit, and added some velcro to the back.
All of these awards were made with the Fat Robin 16-Point Mariner’s Compass Book and Ruler combo. The “Badge” also uses the 32-Point Mariner’s Compass Book and Ruler Combo.
Would you like to make your own Good Vibes Only Award? Here’s how!
First, the background fabric for each of these awards was cut to 18 1/2” square. And here are the templates you’ll need for all four projects.
“Trohpy” is made with an 8” Fat Robin 16-Point Compass Sunflower block using rick rack to finish the outside of this block. Use an 8” freezer paper circle pressed onto the front of the block to help make sure you sew the rick rack in a perfect circle. Sew down the middle of the rick rack with the ends facing towards the outside of the block. Turn the rick rack to the back side and top stitch the compass sunflower on top of the ‘trohpy’ pieces. These pieces are raw edge appliquéd onto the background. Add the opposite velcro piece where you will add your Good Vibes Only Award word.
“Ribbon” is made with a 10” Fat Robin 16-Point Compass Sunflower block using the same technique as explained above to add the rick rack to the block perimeter using a 10” freezer paper circle. I used the templates for the three ribbons to make faced pieces that I left open at the top edge. After turning the ribbons right side out, add the opposite side velcro to each ribbon. Tuck the ribbons under the block and then topstitch the compass sunflower onto the background .
“Medal” is made with an 8” Fat Robin 16-Point Compass Sunflower block using the same technique as explained above to add the rick rack to the block perimeter using an 8” freezer paper circle. Use the templates to cut pieces for the medal for raw edge appliqué, or add seam allowances if you want to sew the strips together. Add the opposite side velcro to the two side ribbons. Appliqué this ribbon unit onto the background, adding a small rectangle for ‘hanging’ the medal. Topstitch the compass sunflower onto the background below the ribbon, sewing over the small rectangle .
“Badge” is made with a 16” Fat Robin 32-Point Compass Sunflower (Version 1) block using the same technique as explained above to add the rick rack to the block perimeter using a 16” freezer paper circle. Use the template page to cut out the pieces and raw edge appliqué them onto the center to create a ‘cross’. Add the opposite side velcro to the center. Topstitch the block onto the background.
Finishing
You can decide at this point if you want to quilt them or not. If you are making pillows, you wouldn’t have to quilt them.
To finish the back for a pillow, cut two 13” x 18 1/2” rectangles out of different fabrics. Make a narrow 1/4” hem down one long side of each of these pieces. Layer the ‘award’ block on top of these overlapped pieces with wrong sides together and matching all the outside raw edges. Machine sew the binding (about 80”) onto the top. Fold binding to the back and hand stitch.
If you want to make small wallhangings, quilt and finish as desired.
