Where Will Your Compass Take You?

Guild and Shop Info!

I would love the opportunity to share my strip piecing method for making mariner’s compass blocks with you!  Since launching in 2015, I have had the pleasure of traveling and teaching all over the country and hope to get back to that very soon!  Since the pandemic has kept me (and most of you!) home for this last year, it is only logical that I would now offer virtual presentations and workshops as well.

Hit the Play button below to see a 3-minute video presentation about my In Person and Virtual Presentations and Workshops.

Currently booking for 2024-2025

Click the button below to email me if you are interested.  It is helpful if you have some dates in mind so I can find a way to best fit you into my schedule. For In Person travel, I would be traveling from Ritzville, WA - nearest airport is at Spokane, WA (GEG).

Since I teach a very specific method that is used with my rulers for strip pieced mariner’s compass blocks and variations, I highly recommend my “Modern Mariner’s Compass – Strip Pieced!” Presentation and my “Strip Pieced Mariner’s Compass Basics” Workshop for my first visit (in person or virtual) with your guild. There is a minimum requirement of two events - lecture/workshop or two or more workshops.  This presentation and workshop give students the best overview of what is possible with my rulers, and the best possible instructions and tips for using my rulers to create gorgeous mariner’s compass blocks and projects from traditional to modern.  You will be amazed at the variety of projects that can be created with my rulers, including any creative project you might dream up!

My Presentation and Workshop have been modified to also be Zoom friendly!

1 Hour Presentation/Lecture – $400

“Modern Mariner’s Compass – Strip Pieced!”

Robin will give a detailed overview of the modern technique and projects using Robin Ruth Design’s system of rulers, books, and patterns for STRIP PIECED mariner’s compass blocks and variations. Robin will share how she is bringing the mariner’s compass block into the 21st century with her modern technique and projects for how you can create your own modern mariner’s compass project. See lots of quilts and get inspired to give this new method a try!

5-6 Hour Workshop – $950 for up to 18 students

“Strip Pieced Mariner’s Compass Basics Workshop”

Have you ever wanted to make a Mariner’s Compass block but were too intimidated?  Not a fan of paper piecing or using tedious templates?  You’ll love this class for learning how to make 16-point compass blocks in 16 different sizes using Robin Ruth Design’s rulers and strip-piecing method!  Join Robin and learn all the compass basics for making either a Skinny Robin or Fat Robin mariner’s compass block.

Once you learn how to use my rulers and strip-piecing technique, you will be free to move on to one of the many patterns and projects made using this ruler system!

Students get to choose which kind of compass they will make - Skinny Robin (pictured below top) or Fat Robin (pictured below bottom). We will make an OctaCompass block and then finish the center and into a project ready square.

This is a technique class and an introduction to my strip-piecing method. You will learn different techniques for finishing the centers of your compass block and for making all 16 sizes of compass blocks.   I will share tons of tips for this revolutionary new strip-piecing method for making mariner’s compass blocks!

Students will receive a supply list prior to class with a small bit of homework, as well as a short Pre-Class Video to cover the basics of my method so that we all start class on the same page.

Students will all need to have their own Skinny Robin OR Fat Robin 16-Point Mariner’s Compass Book and Ruler Combo.

Skinny Robin (left) and Fat Robin (right) 16-Point Mariner’s Compass Book and Ruler Combos. Instructions in book for making compass blocks and variations shown on cover in 16 sizes (even sizes from 6”-36”), finishing instructions for centers, appliqué, sewing into a square, no-circle finishing, and three quilt patterns included in each book. $49.95 Full Retail Price

For In Person workshops, I will bring my rulers (plus a selection of my entire product offering) and have them available at class with a 10% discount – students do not need to buy the book/ruler combos prior to class as everything they need to get ready for class will be provided on the Supply List and in the Pre-Class Video.  Many students may already have their book and ruler combos and do not need to buy another.  If students wish to purchase ahead of class, I would encourage them to either purchase from their favorite local/online quilt shop or directly off my website. Please do not purchase my book and ruler combos off of Amazon.  Even though it may say Robin Ruth Design, these are third-party sellers and I can’t guarantee what you will receive.

For Virtual workshops, students may go ahead and purchase their book/ruler combos independently (read through In Person workshops above), or your guild may provide me with a list of book/ruler combos, patterns, or other rulers that members would like to purchase three weeks in advance.  These will be sent to the guild in bulk with no shipping cost added.

Some more of the details!

Guild may provide contract or I can send my own.

No deposit required, but payment due at end of event.

Cancellations - Generally, 30 days advance notice by either party without penalty (see contract).

In Person Travel

Round-trip mileage is required at the current Federal IRS business rate. Locations farther than 100 miles (or whenever I am there for more than one day) from from Ritzville, WA require hotel lodging and round-trip mileage. If I fly, guilds are responsible for reimbursement of the purchased ticket, and are also responsible for other expenses such as checked baggage fee, local transportation, and meals during my stay.

My husband, David, usually travels with me. We do not ask that you be responsible for any of his expenses, but would need a queen room if a hotel is booked.

In Person Presentations and Workshops

For Presentations, I will need the use of a projector with an HDMI or VGA connector and coordinating screen or large TV. Would also like a large table for my samples, another table for my product, and a quilt stand if you have one available (not necessary though). I always bring a selection of my entire product offering so please make sure that sales are permitted at your venue. I usually try to get a general count of rulers that would be needed for the Workshop and may ship those rulers ahead at my own expense. For the Workshop, I just need a table and iron for demoing - I will bring my own wool mat.

If your group would like to offer two different workshops or if I have been to your guild before, I do offer other workshops. Just ask for other options.

Virtual Presentations and Workshops

If presenting or giving a workshop virtually, I would prefer that your group would provide a Zoom moderator.  If not, I will provide one for an additional fee.

Presentations are intended for viewing by one guild. Please contact me if you intend on inviting a second guild. Presentations and Workshops may not be recorded.

Attendance for lectures is limited to 100 attendees. If more than 100 people, there will be an additional free of $50 to cover additional Zoom fees. List of Workshop attendees must be emailed one week in advance.

Can’t wait to visit your group!
